Sangamo BioSciences Announces the Appointment of J. Tyler Martin, M.D. as Vice President, DevelopmentPoint Richmond, California -- February 3, 2003 -- Sangamo BioSciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: SGMO) announced today the appointment of J. Tyler Martin, M.D. as Vice President, Development. Dr. Martin will have responsibility for preclinical and clinical development of Sangamo’s ZFP Therapeutics programs and products and will report to Edward Lanphier, Sangamo’s president and chief executive officer. Dr. Martin has held senior positions in clinical research in several biotechnology companies engaged in human clinical trials of therapeutics for cardiovascular disease, cancer and infectious diseases. During the course of his career, Dr. Martin filed 11 investigational new drug applications (INDs) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has overseen 47 clinical trials. Prior to joining Sangamo, Dr. Martin was employed at Valentis, Inc., a biotechnology company based in Burlingame, CA.¾ Dr. Martin joined Valentis in 2000 as Vice President, Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Development and finally to Senior Vice President, Research and Development. During his tenure at Valentis, Dr. Martin oversaw the research and development of their plasmid-based gene delivery and regulated gene expression systems and was responsible for filing several INDs for therapeutic products that are currently in clinical trials. Prior to working at Valentis, Dr. Martin was Executive Director, Clinical Research and Development at SyStemix/GTI/Novartis in Palo Alto and led their hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy clinical programs. At SyStemix his duties included supervision of their lead therapeutic program for treatment of HIV infection. Before joining SyStemix he was Director, Clinical Research at Chiron Vaccines in Emeryville. Tyler comes to Sangamo with ten years of experience in clinical program management, said Edward Lanphier. “He has an exceptional background in therapeutic gene transfer in cardiovascular disease, cancer and infectious diseases - all areas that will be particularly important to Sangamo as we move our ZFP Therapeutics from preclinical studies into human clinical trials.” A major focus for the company is the filing of our first IND for our lead ZFP Therapeutic designed to upregulate the expression of the endogenous VEGF A gene.“ Tyler’s extensive background in therapeutic product development will be enormously important to Sangamo as we move our ZFP Therapeutics programs into human clinical trials.” Dr. Martin earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska and an M.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He was a resident in Pediatrics and was awarded a Fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Molecular Microbiology at Washington University, St. Louis Children's Hospital. Dr. Martin is board certified in pediatrics and infectious diseases and is a member of several professional societies including the American Heart Association, the American Society of Gene Therapy and the American Society of Microbiology. “Sangamo’s ZFP TF gene regulation technology is enormously powerful and, as preclinical studies that were recently published in Nature Medicine have demonstrated, can be used to modulate the expression of a therapeutically relevant gene and induce a clinically important physiological effect,” said Dr. Martin. “I'm excited to be joining Sangamo’s experienced management and talented scientific team and am looking forward to directing efforts to move this robust and broadly applicable technology forward into the clinic.” About Sangamo Sangamo BioSciences, Inc., of Richmond, CA, is focused on the research and development of novel transcription factors for the regulation of gene expression. The company’s most advanced therapeutic development program involves the use of transcription factors for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Other therapeutics development programs are focused on cancer, neuropathic pain, ophthalmic and infectious diseases. Sangamo’s proprietary technology enables the engineering of transcription factors known as zinc finger DNA-binding proteins, or ZFPs. By engineering ZFPs so that they can recognize a specific gene, Sangamo has created ZFP transcription factors (ZFP TFs) that can control gene expression and, consequently, cell function. The company is developing ZFP TFs as a fundamentally enabling technology for commercial applications in human therapeutics, pharmaceutical discovery, agriculture and industrial biotechnology. Over twenty leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have utilized ZFP TFs. This press release may contain forward-looking statements based on Sangamo’s current expectations. These forward-looking statements include, without limitation, references to the research and development of novel ZFP TFs and applications of Sangamo’s ZFP TF technology platform. Actual results may differ materially from these forward-looking statements due to a number of factors, including technological challenges, Sangamo’s ability to develop commercially viable products and technological developments by our competitors. See the company’s SEC filings, and in particular, the risk factors described in the company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K and its most recent 10-Q.
