Sangamo Announces Research & Development Management Changes

RICHMOND, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sangamo BioSciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: SGMO) today announced research and development management changes consistent with the company’s continued focus on ZFP Therapeutic(TM) product development.

Philip Gregory, Ph.D. has been promoted to Senior Director, Research; Casey Case, Ph.D. has been promoted to Vice President, Research Operations; and Tyler Martin, M.D., Vice President, Development will take on additional responsibilities in ZFP Therapeutic Gene Regulation. Carl Pabo, Ph.D., the company’s Chief Scientific Officer, will become Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board and transition to a consulting position.

“These changes are consistent with our continued focus on ZFP Therapeutic product development and are enabled by the enormous progress that we have made in the basic science of ZFP-mediated gene regulation,” said Edward Lanphier, President and CEO. “In particular I would like to note Carl's transition. Carl came to Sangamo at a critical time, shortly after Alan Wolffe's tragic death, and made a 100% commitment to the company. I know he remains fully committed to Sangamo in his new role, but I also recognize that he has a very broad range of interests. I believe the current arrangement is ideal for all parties: Carl will be freed of all day-to-day management tasks but will still have a critical role in thinking about the overall scientific directions of the company and in advising our scientific leadership. Given Carl's immense energy, talent, and focus, I am certain that he will continue to play a key role at Sangamo, providing at least 80 days of consulting over the next two years.”

“Sangamo BioSciences has reached a stage where the move towards product development and the continued growth and development of our management team means that the company no longer requires me in a full-time capacity,” said Carl Pabo, Ph.D. “For my part, I look forward to exploring a number of new opportunities (including research and consulting in other areas of protein design and finishing a book that I've been working on), but I remain fully committed to Sangamo and I am very excited about playing a continuing role as Sangamo moves ZFPs forward into the clinic. I have immense respect for Edward Lanphier and the rest of the management team at Sangamo, and look forward to working closely with them in my new capacity to ensure the continued success and growth of our company.”

About Sangamo

Sangamo BioSciences, Inc., of Richmond, CA, is focused on the research and development of novel transcription factors for the regulation of gene expression. The company’s most advanced therapeutic development program involves the use of transcription factors for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Other therapeutics development programs are focused on cancer and neuropathic pain. Sangamo’s proprietary technology enables the engineering of a class of DNA-binding proteins known as zinc finger DNA-binding proteins, or ZFPs. By engineering ZFPs so that they can recognize a specific gene and fusing this to a suitable functional domain, Sangamo has created ZFP transcription factors (ZFP TFs) that can control gene expression and, consequently, cell function. The company is developing ZFP TFs as a fundamentally enabling technology for commercial applications in human therapeutics and pharmaceutical discovery. Sangamo is also developing ZFP-restriction enzymes for use in targeted gene correction for the treatment and potential cure of monogenic disease.
